Wine Tasting- Taylor Port

Name: Taylor Port

Variety of Origin: Port

Country of Origin: United States

Region of Origin: New York, Finger Lakes

Vintage Year: Nonvintage

Price: $9

Wine Critic Review: "Taylor Port is a moderately sweet, ruby red wine with a rich, fruity taste. Iconic among port wines, its smooth finish makes it perfect for evening sipping and a great companion for your favorite dessert." (https://postwines.com/shop/product/taylor-port/56ca64247562752ed5b50700?option-id=cc529e1e71f9e12a2a3964a82346ddd6398cf845d7c75d24645a68156c0ca049&srsltid=AfmBOoq4ft4yINtgkxaFUUDBGLZm3fDA1ImPgTdgpJ_0PBIvRDBM31Ia)

References: Based on page 154 of the Wine Folly, Port has notes of black plum, dried cherry, chocolate, raisin, and cinnamon. I do feel like I could taste dried cherry and plum. It was a hearty wine but I didn't get chocolate or cinnamon. Raisin is hard to say because I could taste grape, but I don't know if it's specifically raisin.

My review: I have never had port wine before and this is my first wine review on a red wine. I didn't love it but it also wasn't that bad. It kinda tastes like cough syrup. I think the cough syrup taste comes from the cherry flavor. Overall it wasn't a bad taste, it was sweet which was nice. I had a fuller body than I was used to. Not mad at it but probably wouldn't buy again.

Wine Tasting- Barefoot Fruitscato Peach

Name: Barefoot Fruitscato Peach

Variety of Grapes: Moscato- Muscat Blanc

Country of Origin: United States

Region of Origin: California

Vintage Year: Nonvintage

Price: $15

Wine Critic Review: "Bursting with all the flavors of perfectly-ripe peaches, Barefoot Peach FRUITSCATO is a sweet way to treat yourself. Fresh from the farm with a bright, crisp finish, it pairs perfectly with everything from artisanal cheeses to delicious desserts." (https://shop.grapesandgrains.com/product/s-10362/p-2940694/buy-barefoot-peach-fruitscato)

References: From Wine Folly, page 138, Muscat Blanc has notes of orange blossom, meyer lemon, mandarin orange, ripe pear and honeysuckle. This wine has nice citrus notes, I would say I could taste meyer lemon and mandarin orange. It's hard to say if I could get the notes of orange blossom and honeysuckle, there was a slight floral taste.

My review: I've had several of the Fruitscato flavors and enjoyed them all. This is definitely one of my favorites of the flavors. It is a nice sweet that has strong peach notes (it's peach flavored). The wine has a light enjoyable body. The sweet of the wine is balanced with the acidity and citrus flavor. Will be drinking again!

Wine and Cheese Pairing

I did a wine and cheese pairing with my roommate! Here is us with us our wine and cheese.

Here is the specific parings.

Wine and Cheese Pairing 1: Hive and Honey Gewurztraminer and Sharp Cheddar

Wine: Hive and Honey Gewurztraminer
Varietal: Gewurztraminer
Tasting Notes: This wine was very nice. It was mildly sweet. It was floral, with notes of honeysuckle. I could taste apricot and honey. The wine was slightly sour. It had an orange-y aroma. My first time trying a Gewurztraminer and I overall enjoyed it.
Pairing Notes: The wine paired much better than I expected. The acidic of the wine cut the fattiness of the cheese. It made the wine taste sweeter than before because of the contrast of the saltiness. The wine and cheese were well matched, one did not overpower the other.

Wine and Cheese Pairing 2: Barefoot Fruit Moscato Watermelon and Parmesan

Wine: Barefoot Fruit Moscato and Parmesan
Varietal: Moscato- Muscat Blanc
Tasting Notes: I have had wines of the same line as this before and liked them. This one is no different. It is a very sweet wine that that is nicely balanced by the acidic and alcohol. For being watermelon flavored there is not a strong watermelon taste, more just generally sweet. Would drink again.
Pairing Notes: The parmesan paired nicely with this wine. The parmesan was slight bitter which contrasted nicely with the sweetness. The sweetness the brought out the richness of the parmesan. The wine wasn't acidic enough to cut through the richness but had a nice contrast. I would say the parmesan overpower the wine but that was okay because this is a mild wine.

Wine and Cheese Pairing 3: Barefoot Pink Moscato and Asiago

Wine: Barefoot Fruit Moscato and Asiago
Varietal: Moscato- Muscat Blanc and Merlot (mostly Muscat)
Tasting Notes: This is a nice sweet basic Moscato. It had aromas of cherries and pomegranate. The flavor had notes of cherries and raspberries. The wine is well balanced with the sweetness and acidity contrasting each other. Not super strong in any way but enjoyable enjoy to get again.
Pairing Notes: The wine paired okay with the cheese. The wine brings out the nuttiness of the cheese and enhances the saltiness. The acidity of the wine was was a nice contrast with the richness of the cheese. The saltiness of the cheese overpowers the wine. The cheese made the wine seem sweeter and more acidic.

Wine Tasting- Secco Peach Bellini

Name: Seeco Peach Bellini

Variety of Origin: Prosecco

Country of Origin: California

Region of Origin: Danville

Vintage Year: NV

Price: $11

Wine Critic Review: "If you can't make it to Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy this inexpensive peach bellini will transform your brunch into something special. Aromas and flavors of white peach and grapefruit combined with refreshing acidity and effervescence is like a mouth full of palate cleansing sunshine." (https://www.bottlevalues.com/wines/Secco-Peach-Bellini-w0877473wr)

References: Based on page 155 of the Wine Folly, Prosecco has notes of green apple, honeydew, pear, lager, and cream. I got notes of honeydew and pear. I didn't taste green apple, lager or cream but this could be because this is peach flavored.

My review: This was a nice wine to drink. It was less sweet than I expected but not too acidic. It mainly tasted and smelled of peach with makes sense as it's a peach flavored wine. It was a well balanced wine, not to sweet, not too acidic. Overall I enjoyed drinking it.

Wine Tasting- Love is Wine

Name: Love is Wine by Cupcake Vineyards

Variety of Origin: Chardonnay

Country of Origin: California

Region of Origin: Napa Valley

Vintage Year: 2022

Price: $10

Wine Critic Review: "The nose has a certain solvent aroma, with overtones of dried oak chips and dried apple slices. On the palate, a doctored vanilla and Sweet’N Low character dominates, which fortunately distracts from the more chemical-driven elements in the wine. There’s a further surprise in the form of notes of gummy peach candy and guava on the finish, fading into bubblegum. It’s an objectively terrible way to end things — just like many of the relationships on the show, amirite?" (https://www.drinkhacker.com/2024/02/13/review-2022-love-is-wine-chardonnay/?srsltid=AfmBOooYGsPyY_I25lMztzgzX_JHOQYOXU2w1Sxm3lS_vC8Ylzw8CUB7)

References: Based on page 96 of the Wine Folly, Chardonnay has notes of yellow apple, starfruit, pineapple, vanilla, butter. I did not get many citrus notes in this wine. I did get notes of butter and a little vanilla. But the notes of yellow apple, starfruit and pineapple I didn't get.

My review: I bought this wine to celebrate the new season of Love is Blind. Since I bought this wine for a Netflix TV show, I assumed it'd be bad. And that assumption was correct. I did not like this wine. It had a very oaky flavor. It was slightly buttery and vanilla-y but that was very subtle. There was a hint of peach that was enjoyable but that's it. Overall it mostly just tastes acidic and was not particularly pleasant to drink. On the bright side the new season of Love is Blind is very good.

Wine Dinner- Super Bowl Edition

This Sunday was the Super Bowl! My roommate and I were making our super bowl dinner and thought it would be fun to do wine pairings with our different courses. Neither of us particularly enjoys cooking, so we kept our courses pretty simple. Here is us with our full spread:

Our first course was cheesy garlic bread (on front of table). We paired this with Stella Rosa's Stella Berry.

Name: Stella Rosa's Stella Berry

Varietal: Brachetto

Tasting Notes: This wine is advertised as berry flavored, which it lives up to with a very strong berry flavor. Specifically notes of strawberry and raspberry can be found. This wine was fairly acidic, but it was balanced nicely by the sweetness of the wine. The wine was not overtly sweet too, I had honestly expected it to be sweeter.

Pairing Notes: This wine paired well as it was a refreshing balance to heavier cheesy garlic bread. The acidity was a nice way to cut some through the buttery flavor. Overall it made the food seem saltier as the sweetness of the wine contrasted the saltiness of the food. Both the food and wine had strong flavor so they did not overpower each other. The garlic bread would possibly pair better with something slightly less strong so that they are not battling each other. But the pairing was still pretty good.

Our second course of the night was cheese pizza (on the back of the table). This was paired with Barefoot Rosé.

Name: Barefoot Rosé

Varietals: Sauvignon blanc, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot gris

Tasting Notes: This is a nice Rosé. It is a bit acidic for my tastes but it's not overwhelming. There is notes of cherry and possibly watermelon in the wine. The note of cherry is stronger in the smell of the wine than the actually taste itself. It has a very light body, as I said before a bit acidic but it needs to be to balance the sweetness.

Pairing Notes: This wine paired okay with the pizza, they didn't particularly compliment each but they also didn't take away from each other. The acidity of the wine was similar to the acidity of the pizza sauce, I feel a less acidic wine would probably pair better with this sauce. The lightness and sweetness of the wine did enhance the richness and saltiness of the pizza with was enjoyable. Neither the pizza nor the wine overpowered each other. The pizza really brought out the sweetness of the wine.

Our last course of the night was chocolate chip cookies (left side of table). This was paired with Barefoot Fruit Moscato Blueberry.

Name: Barefoot Fruit Moscato Blueberry

Varietals: Moscato- Muscat Blanc

Tasting Notes: I really like this wine. It's has a relatively more fully body than the other wines of the night but also isn't too heavy. It is lightly acidic while also being very sweet. The main note of the wine is blueberry, as that's what the wine is flavored to taste like. It has a strong blueberry aroma. I enjoyed the balance of the wine, the sweetness matching the acidity.

Pairing Notes: This wine did not pair great with the cookies. This wine was chosen for the last course as it is a very sweet wine, so it was meant to be slightly like a dessert wine. The sweetness of wine made the cookies seem less sweet. The wine almost overpowered the cookies, with the chocolate fighting the blueberry. The sweet cookies made the wine seem more acidic, which affected the balance of the wine. The cookies would likely pair better with a less sweet wine.

Wine Tasting- Amboscato

Name: Amboscato

Variety of Grapes: Moscato- Muscat Blanc

Country of Origin: Italy

Region of Origin: Bologna

Vintage Year: NV

Price: $9

Wine Critic Review: "Amboscato is a sweet, low alcohol and semi-sparkling, Moscato-based wine. The nose is fresh, with bright and fruity notes of apple, mango, banana, and pineapple. The palate has a soft bubble structure and a slight acidity to temper the sweetness. Enjoy as an aperitif or with desserts made with tropical fruits."  (https://www.lcbo.com/en/amboscato-sweet-white-bianco-38357?srsltid=AfmBOopTlVvvyUuAsBx1KQXRFBH-NYA7awqmqk2q2DhtyKLqKGc2FwqW)

References: Based on page 138 of the Wine Folly, Muscat Blanc has notes of orange blossom, meyer lemon, mandarin orange, ripe pear and honeysuckle. I was definitely able to get notes of pear, I think this is one of the stronger flavors in the wine. I would say there was also citrus and floral notes, which could relate to lemon and orange and orange blossom and honeysuckle respectively.

My review: To be honest, I bought this wine because it was on sale and the bottle was cute. So I didn't have super high expectations for this wine. But it really impressed me. It was a very sweet wine. It had floral and citrus aromas. I got notes of pear, citrus and light floral. Overall this wine was a pleasant surprise.

Wine Tasting- Barefoot Bubbly Sweet Rosé

 Name: Barefoot Bubbly Sweet Rosé

Variety of Grapes: Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Muscat

Country of Origin: United States

Region of Origin: California

Vintage Year: NV

Price: $11

Wine Critic Review: "Barefoot Bubbly Sweet Rosé is the perfect sweet and sparkling treat. Fruity and lively, this Bubbly will surprise and delight with each sip. Enjoy the juicy layers of loganberries, sweet cherries and the delightfully lingering finish. Deliciously sweet like Barefoot Bubbly Moscato Spumante and Barefoot Bubbly Pink Moscato, Barefoot Bubbly Sweet Rosé has beautiful ribbons of red fruit in the aromas."  (https://www.argonautliquor.com/products/14363655/barefoot-bubbly-sweet-rose-pride-edition srsltid=AfmBOoqTliq9oyVPchYhLZkf1R86CDRXvaXTEVV41aYqnVtwTH0qslYH)

References: From page 149 of Wine Folly, Pinot Gris is a pink grape variation of Pinot Grigio and has notes of white peach, lemon zest, cantaloupe, raw almond, and crushed gravel. I could definitely get notes of peach, lemon zest and cantaloupe as it was a sweet fruity wine. To be honest, I have no clue how to taste crushed gravel. From page 96 of Wine Folly, Chardonnay has notes of yellow apple, starfruit, pineapple, vanilla and butter. The only note I can confidently say I got from this is vanilla, there was definitely a hint of the sweetness from it. The others I cannot say confidently that I tasted. This could be because there was less of this variety than the others.

My review: This was a great wine! It was sparkling which was fun. It was also a sweet wine, which I personally like. It had a generally sweet fruity flavor. The wine had a general fruity aroma, I could smell a citrus scent with a hint of berry, maybe cherry but it was hard to tell. The specific notes I got in the wine were citrus, peach and berry. Would drink again!

Wine Tasting- Barefoot Riesling

Name: Barefoot Riesling

Variety of Grapes: Riesling

Country of Origin: United States

Region of Origin: California

Vintage Year: NV

Price: $7

Wine Critic Review: "Straw color. Aromas of canned pineapple, pickled ginger, lemon verbena and green mango, and white and yellow flowers with an tangy, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a tingling, delightful, medium-length canned pineapple, clover honey, and poached pear finish. Racy acidity and nice spectrum of fruits to balance with the lightly candied sweetness; a quintessential off-dry Riesling."  (https://www.tastings.com/Wine-Review/Barefoot-NV-Riesling-California-USA-05-18-2024.aspx)

References: From page 158 of Wine Folly, Riesling has notes of lime, green apple, beeswax, jasmine, and petroleum. I felt I could taste lime and general floral notes which was probably jasmine. To be honest I don't know what petroleum would taste like so I don't know how to identify that.

My review: I liked this wine more than I thought I would. I got notes of orange, floral, lemon and a little vanilla. Overall, there was not a particularly strong flavor, it was just general sweet flavor. It was a sweet wine which I enjoyed. It was not dry which I also enjoyed. Overall would drink again!

Wine Tasting- Cupcake Rose

Name: Cupcake Rosé

Variety of Grapes: Blend of Grenache, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Merlot

Country of Origin: United States

Region of Origin: California

Vintage Year: 2022

Price: $10

Wine Critic Review: "This light-bodied wine boasts aromas of flowers and pistachio. Ripe and fruity flavors echo the nose and carry the soft, soothing texture." Jim Gordon from Wine Enthusiast (https://www.wineenthusiast.com/buying-guide/cupcake-2020-rose-california/?srsltid=AfmBOorDbY_NpT4LylkZfuvFAHfNYR1wkhEAgIsZjXHtoCADoVbePp-E)

References: There is not notes for Rosé listed specifically in Wine Folly. Looked at 2 of the grapes included in the wine. From page 150, Pinot Noir has notes of cherry, raspberry, clove, mushroom and vanilla. From page 131, Merlot has notes of cherry, plum, chocolate, dried herbs, and vanilla. When smelling the wine I could definitely smell the raspberry. When tasting the wine I got the notes of vanilla, cherry and chocolate.

My review: This wine was more acidic than I expected. I generally associate rosé with being sweeter than this. It was also richer than I expected, with the note of chocolate I could taste. The wine describes itself as having notes of raspberry and watermelon. I could smell the raspberry and slightly taste it, the watermelon I did not taste. I also found citrus notes in the wine.

Wine Tasting- La Marca Prosecco Rosé

Name: La Marca Prosecco Rosé Variety of Origin: Prosecco, Pinot Noir Country of Origin: Italy Region of Origin: Vento Vintage Year: NV Price...
